Blessed are the Peacemakers… Where’s Wyatt Earp when I need him?

Today on the way to school, Aidan and I studied the Beatitude, “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” Aidan was awesome.

Dad: What’s a peacemaker?

Aidan: Someone who brings peace to the whole world.

Isn’t amazing what we call “peacemakers?”  Wyatt Earp, a famous lawman in the Old West, was known for carrying a Colt revolver known as the “Peacemaker.”  It amazes me that we have come to understand that peace can only be found on the other side of something.   We buy into the lie that peace can only be purchased not freely given.  We fight for peace. We drink to have peace.  We find ways to bring a temporary silence that numbs humanity to the problems they have.  We never really fix it.

I am not anti-soldier. Those who know me know that about me.  I am not anti-war.  I think it is important for good men to stand up for what is right.   But I do believe that we cannot create peace in our own image of it.  We miss out on the true peace God want’s to give.   Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)”

What kind of peace can the world give?   A peace that numbs for a small amount of time and then the pain, hurt, war rages on inside of us.

Where’s Wyatt Earp and his Peacemaker when you need him?  To be honest, I don’t know.  Peace was never gained through vengence.

Where’s God and his Peacemaker when you need him?  Just a prayer away…

No promises on the circumstances, only the peace to go through them.
