If you remember 1980s rap, you know Run DMC.  If you watch MTV, you know Run’s House. Then you probably know who Rev. Run is.  When I picked up this book at our local library, I was intrigued by the title because I feel like so often we give control to other people or things.  We act as if it was taken instead of given. This book was written by Rev. Run and his wife, Justine.  It is really amazing that they chose not to muddle their voice but to speak from two different perspectives.

Run’s challenge is one of intentionality and purpose.  As parents, we face challenges that often get the best of us.  However, we can with intentionality and perseverance, overcome the challenges instead of letting them lead us down a spiraling path.  We can chose the road less traveled and become a more focused and successful family.

For anyone who is interested in being a better parent, this book has some great tips and hard truths that have to learned and utilized in our lives.  This book speaks to everyone from single parent’s to blended families.  Run can speak to almost any family type.  If you need a good parenting book, you need to read this one.

Here are a few of Run’s Tips:

  1. EGO = Edging God Out -If you are letting your ego control you, you are edging God out of his rightful spot.
  2. Growing a healthy family starts by growing a healthy marriage.
  3. A family is often like a business.  Run it like a COE – chief of everything.
  4. Examples will do more for kids than just telling them.
