Shrek: [peels an onion] NO! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.

Donkey: Oh, you both have LAYERS. Oh. You know, not everybody like onions. What about cake? Everybody loves cake!

Shrek: I don’t care what everyone else likes! Ogres are not like cakes.

In this classic conversation between Donkey and Shrek, Shrek reveals a very important truth. Humans like ogres consist of many layers. And like Shrek’s reaction to Donkey, often not very civil.

Each of my layers often fights with other layers. One of my layers is sharp and jagged like shark’s teeth. Another layer has controlling and manipulative tendencies. Underneath all my layers, other layers of fear, doubt, and anger drive the upper layers to commit more and more crimes against my fellow-man. They drive the greed and lust for more that flows without questions.

Each of my layers needs grace. My wounded layers need God’s peroxide of grace poured over them. Robert Capon refers to this kind of grace in his book, “Between Noon and Three.” He says that during the Reformation, men found fifteen hundred year old, two hundred proof grace. My fears, doubts, and layers of pain need that kind of grace. They need radical grace straight up.  Not over the rocks.  No add-ons or extras.

Jeremy Cowart has prepared a time lapsed creation of this visual in a short film called “Deep Dark Blackness.” Check it out and then check out the People of the Second Chance. POTSC combines people from all backgrounds to bring radical grace to those who need and those who need it but won’t admit it.
